No Kid Should Go Back to School Empty-Handed
Every student deserves the chance to succeed — and that starts with having the right tools on the first day of school. Through Operation Backpack®, VOA Puerto Rico is working to ensure children from low-income and unhoused families return to the classroom with dignity, confidence, and the supplies they need to thrive.
In 2025, we distributed backpacks to 400 students on the island, quadrupling our goal. In 2026, we’re aiming even higher, and we need your help.
Why It Matters
For many families, back-to-school season is a financial burden. The cost of backpacks, notebooks, pens, and binders can add up – especially as prices continue to rise – forcing families to choose between groceries and school supplies. That’s where Operation Backpack® comes in.
This year, we are working with Walmart PR and the Municipality of Aibonito to help Pre-K through 12th graders in two public schools:
- Escuela José Celso Barbosa (Pre-K–8th)
- Escuela Superior Bonifacio Sánchez Jiménez (9th–12th)
These schools serve a high number of students from low-income families, many of whom begin the school year without basic educational materials. Escuela José Celso Barbosa also includes a specialized Autism classroom that requires consistent and structured supplies to support student learning.
VOA Puerto Rico is working directly with school leadership to identify needs and procure grade-specific materials. Staff and volunteers will assemble backpacks and coordinate distribution in July prior to the start of the academic year.
